caranthir: Continuing with the topic of my response to Hrewsahgs: I added an alternative response to H14; J16 (and the final player move in that case is J13). The aim is to illustrate the value of the H14 forcing move when the opponent decides not to be forced.
Hrewsahgs: What makes the H14 forcing move necessary? Why not J16J15J18 right away?
caranthir: Without other context, I see no special reason not to J16J15J18. Katago would play it too (on an otherwise empty board). If starting with H14, in that setting, Katago would not answer at J14 but J16. So, the context for the problem must be that the opponent doesn't want us to connect to the center, and therefore we can exchange H14J14 as a slight improvement to the sequence (the opponent's outside influence is degraded a bit). ----- That said, I think we should accept J16J15J18 anyway. This would be the general answer that achieves connecting in more cases (less dependent on the value of the outside and the distribution of the rest of the board.) ------ I'll add J16J15J18 and so on.
